Community Zone studentsStudents in the high school’s Community Zone program recently traveled to the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena with program coordinator Sam Bligen to participate in Teen Traffic Safety Day. The goal of the event was to educate area teens about the importance of driving sober, buckling up and the dangers of distracted driving. Activities included Battle of the Belts, a team competition that tested how quickly students could buckle their seatbelts and rotate around a car and repeat the procedure in all four seats. The students also listened to Bobby Petrocelli, a speaker, author, educator and coach who lost his wife to a drunk driver. The event was made possible by the Broome County STOP-DWI Program, the Broome County Traffic Safety Program and State Farm Insurance.
